cotton gin patented - slavery revived

on March 14 1794 Eli Whitney received a patent for the cotton gin.

cotton bale production increased almost 700 fold over the next 60 years mostly by the ease of this machine and the labor of enslaved Africans.

The invention of the cotton gin allowed for the large-scale harvest of cotton. The cotton gin allowed the fluff around the seeds to be more easily and cheaply extracted in large numbers than could be done by hand, and made the practise an extremely profitable one. In the Southern United States, because the cotton gin only required unskilled labour, slaves were often employed in its operation. This led to an increase in the use of slaves in the South and increasing reliance on a plantation economy, leading to a greater divide between the North and the South that would culminate in the American Civil War.
