Quick book review - Questioning Evangelism
Campus Crusader Randy Newman offers in Questioning Evangelism - Engaging People's Hearts the Way Jesus Did a modified approach to evanglism. I boils down to "tell me about your philosophy, can i tell you about mine?" his assumption is that most questions asked of Christians are veiled attacks and answers are not the primary response people want. Instead they want empathy and validation of their questions and concerns. Until the empathy and validation are provided, the believer has little currency. But by responding by clarifying the concerns and turning the question back to the person who may be unintentionally confronted with the weakness of their own philosophy, the Christian has some house money to play with. He does offer sample dialogues on some of the biggies that unbelievers throw out, hypocrisy, intolerance, evil.
i appreciated his lack of success stories. his stories are not about his wins. he considers a victory dialogues that are still continuing. does that mean his proposal is a failure? no. in fact, the old paradigm was a failure. at least he can still engage the same people rather than turn them off so badly that they no longer want to speak to him or any other Christian. he is glad that a negative stereotype has been overcome.
