Drive 55 Conservation Project :: $ave fuel, Drive 55!

Drive 55 Conservation Project :: $ave fuel, Drive 55!: "The goal of Drive55.org is to reduce petroleum usage by 20% to 50%.

How can this be achieved? By convincing drivers to slow down and obey existing speed limits, never driving over 55 MPH (88km). This will save lives, reduce insurance rates, reduce pollution and improve the overall quality of our lives.

Let's be willing to learn about the issues and take personal responsibility for the part each of us plays in this petroleum-dependent culture. We must each do all we can to use less."

It is one thing to take personal responsibility toward stewardship, but being irresponsible on the road is quite another. Driving significantly slower than the flow of traffic creates a more dangerous - not safer - situation on the highway by effectively creating a large heavy object that is heading towards oncoming traffic at a 20mph delta. Drivers are forced to make sudden and often dangerous reactions - which may be fine when the traffic is sparse from within the relative comfort of an SUV, but when the road is dense with traffic and large trucks, slow drivers are more than a simple nuissance - they are a menace and endangering people's lives. Instead of a campaign encouraging people to drive slower, a better campaign would be for people to learn the rules of the road, be more intentional about driving and driving safely, to be courteous and patient as a driver.
