3rd visit from the mormons
they came back last Saturday and we chatted for an hour. i spoke more this time. we sat in the backyard so my kids drifted in and out of the conversation. they don't know their church history. i showed them quotes about Joseph Smith's drinking. they never heard of it. i asked them how come Jesus says what goes in our moths doesn't make us sinful, it's what comes out of our hearts, but you claim Jesus now says, well coffee, smokes, and alcohol in your mouth will make you sinful. their answer to all changes is God can do whatever he wants to. it's the same position of the Muslim. i contrasted their theologies, LDS and Muslim, frequently. how can they say one is better if their is no way to determine truth except by feelings or fiat?
i did bring up the polygamy issue. they got upset. i then showed them a printout of contradictions between the book of Mormon and other LDS scripture, completely avoiding the contrast between the Bible and LDS books, and they got really uptight. they said all those verses are out of context. in the book of Mormon, their god abhors polygamy in a couple places. and the context doesn't change any of that.
i tried to be fair and go to a mormon apologist site (FAIR) with a mormon wiki. they attempt to address problems the critics point out. i figure, these guys have their act together, they aren't a couple 20 year olds without a clue. unfortunately, the quality of responses were not improved. it's hard to defend exposed lies. the best response is to deflect and answer a question not asked.
we ended up exchanging numbers. they haven't called me yet. i did, once again, appeal to the simplicity of the good news of Jesus. He did it all. i repent and believe, he sends his Holy Spirit to dwell in me to begin the process of making me holy. i don't have to abstain from foods, i don't have to wear special clothes, because the righteous live by faith. it's really good news. part of what makes it good is it's simplicity. in order to graduate from college, i had a sheet of classes that needed to be taken. i couldn't graduate till all those boxes were checked. with Jesus, it's one box. do you believe in Him?
